Forgiveness: The Overlooked Leadership Superpower.
There is a point in every leader’s evolution where mastery is no longer about knowing more.
It becomes about carrying less.
Not less responsibility.
Less residue.
The unresolved tensions.
The quiet self-judgments.
The professional disappointments or strained relationships that are still living in the background of the nervous system.
No matter how strategic or experienced we are, we do not make our best decisions when we are carrying emotional weight from the past.
Forgiveness becomes a leadership competency.
Not a soft skill.
A clarity skill.
The Quiet Work of Release
Forgiveness is not forgetting.
It is not condoning.
It is not moving on prematurely or minimizing truth.
Forgiveness is releasing the energetic thread that keeps us bound to an old moment, emotion, or identity so we can return to choice.
And leaders must practice it in two directions:
Forgiving others.
Not for their sake.
For sovereignty.
A leader who carries resentment also carries reactivity.
Forgiving yourself.
For decisions made with a limited perspective.
For seasons defined by survival.
For being human while leading humans.
When pain goes unaddressed, it lingers beneath awareness, shaping how we speak, trust, and decide.
Forgiveness lightens that weight, clears the channel, and returns us to the steady ground of presence and wisdom.
Forgiveness does not erase the past.
It integrates the lesson and frees the energy to lead forward.
Tapping Ancient Wisdom
Forgiveness has been honored across many traditions as a path to peace and clarity. In Hawaiian culture, there is a sacred practice called Ho‘oponopono, which means “to make right.”
It is a process traditionally guided within families or communities to restore balance and alignment when something feels unsettled. At its essence, it reflects a universal human truth that reconciliation begins within.
When adapted for personal reflection, the modern form invites quiet acknowledgment and responsibility for what we carry.
A simple inward sequence often shared is:
“I am sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you.”
It’s a gentle reset.
A softening around what has tightened.
A release of emotional residue.
A return to neutrality and presence.
This isn’t sentimental.
It’s sacred.
It’s energy hygiene.
The Return to Presence
Choose one moment, one person, or one version of yourself you are ready to release.

When we forgive, we do not forget.
